Counseling

“We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures, we are the sum of the Father’s love for us and our real capacity to become the image of His Son Jesus.”

-St Pope John Paul II

That means that no matter how bad life is, or no matter how sinful or off course we are, Jesus is right there with us. When the disciples were huddled in fear after our Lord was Crucified, He came to them… “Jesus entered through the locked doors.” He stood right there in their midst and spoke the words “Peace be with you.”

One of the ways that the Lord does this today is through counseling. Is there any part of you that is trapped or stuck? A Catholic or faith based counselor can help you to open up and allow Jesus into your heart. Maybe you notice someone you love who is struggling with “issues”, anxiety, depression, anger, loss of a loved one, PTSD, mid-life crisis, aging, alcoholism, drug addiction, marriage trouble, eating disorders, gambling, sexual abuse or addiction, loneliness or isolation. In all of these forms of hell Jesus descends. You do not have to go through it alone.

If you would like Christ to descend into your own personal “hell” I invite you to encounter him in the Sacraments. Just ask and myself or your parish priest and would be glad to give you Anointing of the Sick, hear your Confession, and most importantly join with you at the Eucharist.

You don’t have to walk the journey alone,

Fr. Michael

  • I use many clinical techniques, however, I primarily utilize a cognitive-behavioral approach based upon researched psychological practice and Catholic spiritual principles.  I derive these principles from the teachings of the Catholic Church, the writings of the saints, the Scriptures, my training in theology, and the writings of many current Catholic practitioners.  Cognitive psychology teaches us to replace thinking errors with more effective thoughts and behaviors to achieve emotional and behavioral health.  I believe that the most effective thinking is based upon truth and that truth is revealed by Jesus Christ and given to us by the Church.

I also believe that healing is best done within the context of a trusting and understanding relationship. My training in existential-phenomenological psychology from Duquesne University, as well as my commitment to the true love of neighbor, are my basis for forming and maintaining healing relationships with my patients.

James R. Rodio, MD, LLC | jamesrodiomd.com

The Catholic psychiatrist can be likened to a type of auto mechanic who fixes and optimizes the functioning of a vehicle – in this example, the biological functioning of the human body. Coexisting conditions are treated, indicated medications are provided, and multiple health measures are included in this corporal work. But a well-tuned car still must be driven properly and optimally. In the therapeutic relationship, the psychiatrist can be a type of driving instructor, hearing and seeing how the patient maneuvers, working to maximize recognition of the past, and practicing flexibility and adaptability in the present. In these ways, the Catholic psychiatrist can contribute in addressing the obstacles that affect a patient’s life of Faith.

As a practicing Catholic, I understand the practice of the Faith. Like any person, a Catholic may be affected by the physical malady of biological depression, bipolar disorder, psychotic spectrum illness – or any psychiatric condition, including substance abuse and dependency. There is a historical antipathy between religion and psychiatry, often due to theoretical assumptions made by some medical practitioners. Contemporary psychiatric treatments challenge this divide. Certainly, the Catholic approach to inquiring and knowing deeply predates psychiatry; this thorough psychiatric approach creates a biological and interpersonal understanding. The proper medical treatment of psychiatry diagnoses the condition; treatment allows one to function optimally, including in one’s practice of the Catholic Faith
